Wheelrights are believed to have made the first examples using the curved form of the wheel as a chair back and spokes in place of splats. King George II is said to have taken refuge during a storm at a villager’s home near Windsor castle. He was so impressed with the comfort of the chair that he ordered several made for his own use.
